OK, I just had to comment on this one about the ego – it was really fabulous – I felt like I learned a lot because while this is all stuff that I believe (that money doesn’t buy you happiness and that having and buying and getting more stuff is definitely not the key to happiness), I had never tied it in with ego and corporate salaries, etc.! I do believe that if you were truly happy you’d want to share your wealth and not just hoard and store it – because if you were truly prosperous you would know that the law of circulation would work on your behalf and you would have everything you need and want.
I have always operated by the principle that the more I have, the more I can share. One thing that always thrills me is when I earn more money, I can contribute more to charitable organizations I believe in. I look forward to writing those checks to charities a lot more than I look forward to paying my bills (obviously!), but also knowing that I used my money for the good of the other human beings on the planet creates a sense of connectedness and long-term well-being which I never get from buying a new pair of shoes, for example. There’s nothing wrong with buying a new pair of shoes – it just doesn’t bring me the same sense of satisfaction as knowing that I loaned money to a small business person in Pakistan so that she could feed her family and send her children to school (see www.kiva.org) or helped someone else build a safe and decent shelter for their family (Habitat for Humanity).
Thanks for being willing to share, Janet!
